John McCallum is a contemporary Australian artist whose work reflects a lifelong connection to the Australian landscape and the diverse experiences that have shaped his creative journey.
His early years were spent working as a jackaroo before progressing to the management of remote pastoral properties. These formative experiences fostered an intimate understanding of the vastness, resilience and subtle rhythms of the Australian outback—qualities that continue to inform his painting practice today.
Throughout his professional life, McCallum has worked in landscape design, timber sign carving, marketing and art education. Each discipline contributed to his understanding of form, composition, craftsmanship and visual communication. His artistic development began with the study of tonal painting under Alan Martin and has continued through life drawing studies with Yvonne Audette and abstract expressionist painting with Richard Birmingham.
Now working primarily in abstraction, McCallum seeks to evoke the spirit and emotional resonance of the landscape rather than its literal appearance. Through gesture, colour and layered surface, his paintings explore themes of memory, distance, light and the enduring presence of the Australian land.
His work has been exhibited at the Fortyfive Downstairs Gallery ,Victorian Artists Society and Box Hill Community Arts Centre and is held in private collections.
